Introduction
: Statement of Intent
Equal opportunities and anti‑discriminatory practices are part of good community
involvement and voluntary work practices. They are
not a bolt‑on‑extra and are not additional to the core activities of groups
or organizations.
In the development of this equal opportunities there is a commitment to empower discriminated
groups or communities. There is
also a commitment to educate people to take action to stop their discriminatory policies,
practices and actions.
1. STATEMENT OF INTENT
·SCA is actively opposed to all forms of discrimination based on any grounds including
race, nationality, ethnic or cultural origins,
physical or mental disability, appearance, religious beliefs, age, class, gender or
orientation.
·SCA will introduce measures to combat all direct or indirect discrimination in its
employment practice and its service delivery.
·SCA will positively seek to ensure that no groups and individuals are disadvantaged
in its provisions of services and that they are
adequately represented at all levels within the organisation and will actively assist
all groups and individuals to use the services of
SCA.
·SCA will ensure that its executive committee diverse and representative of the target
community.
·SCA will treat with absolute confidence any information disclosed by an executive
committee member and community member who
might be experiencing illnesses that might lead them to be stigmatised or marginalised.
·SCA will display a copy of this statement in all the areas of operation and where
members of the public have access to its services. A
copy of the statement will be displayed where possible in relevant languages.
· SCA will support its staff and users in challenging any acts, statements or actions
which discriminate against others, whether those
others are present or not. SCA reserves the right to withdraw its services from individuals
or associations with persistent offenders.
Equal Opportunity Policy
2. Service Delivery
·SCA will display a copy of its Equal Opportunities Policy in all places from which
it provides services. SCA requires all its staff to work
within its Equal Opportunities Policy. Users are encouraged to complain to any of
SCA staff about any discriminatory behaviour, act or
statement made in its premises.
·SCA will publicise its services to all of its target community. Where specific media
is indicated, e.g. Braille, language, every effort will
be made to provide public it through such media.
·SCA will monitor the users of its services across all areas to ensure that all sections
of the target community have access. This
monitoring will include gender, age, ethnicity, language and marital status. This
information, which is confidential and anonymous,
will be used when planning services.
·SCA will use the information it gains from working with users in order to influence
local and national policy and highlight any
discriminatory practices. This information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
·On a regular basis SCA will use various methods to consult with service users about
the services it provides. The information gained
will be used as another tool to develop the services, with particular reference to
the effectiveness of the Equal Opportunities Policy.
3 Employment
SCA will use job descriptions and person specifications in all its recruitment to
ensure as objective a recruitment process as
possible. Posts of six months length or more will be advertised as widely as possible
within financial constraints, after due
consideration of internal redeployment needs.
All jobs will be reviewed by a recruitment panel. This panel will draw up a job description,
and person specification, and be involved
throughout the recruitment process. Commitment to implementing the Equal Opportunities
Policy will always be a condition of
employment. The make up of the panel must have regard to gender and race.
The panel shall shortlist only on the basis of the person specification. ·All panel
members must have undergone recent training on
recruiting within an Equal Opportunities Policy. During the interview, all candidates
will be asked the same questions and their
answers scored against the previously agreed responses.
SCA will review the profile of job applicants and employees regularly, to help maintain
diversity within its workforce. SCA will regularly
review its conditions of service to ensure that it does not discriminate against
any groups or individuals. This will include staff
development, redundancy and promotion. Where the proportion of a particular group
is small, SCA will seek to take positive action as
permitted by legislation.
The Recruitment and Selection Procedures, which are in line with the Equal Opportunity
Policy, will be referred to in all recruitment
and selection processes.
4. Management, Monitoring, Training etc on Equal Opportunity Practices
SCA aims to provide all staff and management committee members with training to implement
this policy.
The constitution of SCA requires that the management committee is diverse and representative
of its target user community. This
requirement is part of this Equal Opportunities Policy too.
SCA executive committee board shall monitor the implementation and development of
the Equal Opportunities Policy. The
community members will participate in the monitoring of the implementation of the
equal, opportunity policy and this will be evaluated
annually..
SCA executive committee will ensure that resources (including funding bids) are sought
to make the policy a reality.
